How do we make a space for punk rock ice cream?
Info:
Caleta & Bad Habit is more than a restaurant and ice cream shop—it’s a physical expression of attitude, flavor, and subversion. Founded by Jesse and Javi Zuniga, two seasoned restaurateurs with a vision for something bold and unexpected, the space called for a complete departure from the traditional “clean-cut” aesthetic of ice cream parlors. Our role was to translate that energy into architecture—challenging conventions through materiality, lighting, and spatial logic, while navigating the full arc of the project from concept design through permitting, construction, and opening.
- Aesthetic Subversion: We replaced the expected white tile palette with deep black finishes that extend from the scooping counter to the lounge furniture, setting the tone for a space that feels equally bold and moody.
- Material Expression: Finishes like silky plaster, exposed brick, and mirrored custom bars reflect the building’s character while amplifying the brand’s punk ethos.
- Unexpected Moments: Playful lighting choices, warped wallpaper grids, and a disco ball in the ADA restroom introduce moments of levity and surprise, flipping the “family-friendly” genre on its head without losing hospitality.
Behind the scenes, we worked closely with fabricators, code consultants, and the city to execute challenging logistical requirements. Fire-rated walls were implemented to separate the kitchen, while rated glass inserts preserved visual connection to the heart of the operation.
Key Contributions:
- 3D Modeling – Produced detailed visualizations for design development, material testing, and client review.
- 2D Drawings – Created technical documentation for permit submission and on-site execution.
- Negotiations & Permitting – Acted as liaison between client, fabricators, and city regulators to streamline approvals and inspections.
- Inspections – Ensured compliance and design fidelity during site visits and punch walkthroughs.
