Form Follows Function?

This collaboratively written essay was penned with the intention of exploring the origins of form following function and whether its arguable influence is of any consequential relevance in contemporary design practices, as well as exploring exemplary instances of the fusion of both form and function.  Working with somebody in a different field is a good way to get insight into different aspects of the design process you may not have encountered in your own experiences, especially when concerning architectural aphorisms

Kids' Pamphlet

Getting children interested in speculative design concepts, this was an attempt at creating a handout that could help get kids interested in community events or clubs.  The hope was that by having an early concept of an end goal, there would be motivation to pursue the earlier stages of the same idea using resources available to the children at the time of reading.  Using digital collages with imagery familiar to kids avoids an explicit articulation of the design questions while their imagination fills in the gaps as to what their specific idea might materialize as.

CO2 Eradication

The unifying theme within all schools of sustainable design revolves around utilizing renewable resources - ones that are available to be continually tapped for energy or construction needs without harm to our environment.  One of the biggest sources of damage is a gas called carbon dioxide.  According to the EPA'S Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sink: 1990-2014, carbon dioxide accounts for 81% of all greenhouse gasses created by humans.  While it is one of the most detrimental factors contributing to climate change, it may also provide us as one of the most plentiful resources generated from human activity.

Refuge and Urbanism

Migrant and refugee populations are a demographic subjected to rancorous ignorance around the world.  This paper looks at two historical instances of large refugee populations and how their settlements, in various stages of permanence, influenced successive urban and legislative strategies.  How the host countries reacted is also explored within this essay, considering the full range of benevolent to malevolent reactions that are possible in similar situations, with the intention of learning how to deal with parallel situations in today's international civilization.
